Removing data disc from a hard drive and input into another case?

Post by stridernyc »

Hello. I'm not sure if this is possible or not but I have some old hard drives from back since 2006. Back when 80GB was huge. A couple years ago I tried to recover my data from those hard drives but it gave me the clicking noise. I still have them and would like to recover my data from those drives eventually. Is there a way to take those data discs out of the casings for those hard drives and input them into something else so that the disc can be read?

Yes and no. Generally if the heads have failed on a drive we swap out the read-write heads rather than swap platters. However you do need a professional data recovery company to do this with a cleanroom environment and special tools.

Although your drive is clicking, it may not be read-write head failure. Most data recovery companies will give you a free evaluation where they will diagnose the issues and let you know the cost of recovery.

If you let us know your location we can probably recommend a reputable company.

Thank you. I live in the NYC area. Do you know of any company around here?

I'm not familiar with Tri-State, but would also recommend Data-Medics. If you don't mind shipping to Canada, you could take advantage of our low dollar and prices at Recovery Force.

I would of course also highly recommend Recovery Force as well, just though Canada was a little distance from NYC ;)
