RapidSpar 2.50a Relesed

Post by lcoughey »

An update was released yesterday with some pretty significant changes. Here is what RapidSpar posted on their Facebook page yesterday:
We are happy to announce a major update to RSA. Here are the biggest additions:

1) “Recover” files function will now clone all files at once linearly, rather than one by one. In other words, instead of reading every fragment of file 1 before moving on to file 2, RSA will combine all fragments together and recover them all at once linearly, which makes the drive spend less time seeking. With this change, speed of recovery of small files without bad sectors is increased by 5 times!
Note: if you select “Skip files with bad sectors” or go directly to “Save” instead of “Recover” then files will still be recovered one by one. We will soon be adding a new mode of operation where RSA V2.6 will be able to work only with target drive to save previously recovered files, effectively allowing you to do recoveries in two steps – first “Recover” files to target drive, then disconnect source drive, and “Save” files from target to your PC.
2) Speed of file tree loading has been increased by 10-30%.

3) HTML file report generation was added (Data Acquisition Add-on required). This function creates an HTML listing showing all the files that were recovered together with their integrity status, which can be used to easily communicate the results of the recovery.
Note: RSA directory now contains the CustomerReport-template.html file which can be adjusted to customize the reports (for example by adding your own branding) to make them look professional. The language of the template is standard HTML.

4) Sector map and drive status information are now shown within RSA.

5) After diagnostics, RSA will now offer to unlock ATA password protected drives using a known user password.

I've taken a little time to test it out and it is really good. There is a minor glitch with the HTML file report generation which they are aware of. It is easily fixed by copying the "CostomerReport-template.html" file from the desktop to the RapidSpar folder under Programs Files.

My thoughts, thus far:

1. HTML reporting

After dealing with a minor glitch where the report template was on the desktop rather than in the RapidSpar folder, it looks pretty much the same as the report generated with DeepSpar...both very similar to Snap2HTML, with the exclusion of the search box.

2. Imaging status in the RapidSpar Assistant

This is a welcomed addition to the GUI interface, but there are a couple things that would be nice.
- show the number of unread sectors
- show the imaging progress live, even if the user clicks to image via the RapidSpar touchscreen, assuming that it is already connected to a RapidSpar task in RapidSpar Assistant

They've already updated to 2.51a to fix the html report glitch and likely a few other minor glitches that they may have already discovered.
