On that Samsung HDD, I managed to get those 2 bad blocks back from the void. So clearing the G-List does work as expected.

That's without a doubt SpinRite's most useful feature then.

Shame it does not stop re-writes when bad sectors can be read successfully. But it's a step closer towards doing the right thing.

We think we got the data from this bad sector 100%. Don't worry, even if we didn't, it is unlikely you will ever notice.

SR gave this drive a good pounding, lots of stuff added to the G-List, it's taking a while to clear it.
Aborted. Was taking far too long. Think SR broke the drive.

Drive still reads but...

Why does "Format Unit" no longer complete?
Why does "Clear G-List" no longer complete?

It would be very useful if you can carefully document this.

Timeline of things done to Drive

1st run of SR on level 2 really struggled, drive went offline and stopped responding to RESET commands.

1st run of "Format Unit" completed.
1st run of "Clear G-List" completed.

2nd run of SR on level 2 appears to struggle less, but lots of bad sectors near start of drive. Starting 1% in seems to work better.

2nd run of "Format Unit" fails to complete. Should take around 58-60 minutes, but still running after a few hours.
2nd run of "Clear G-List" fails to complete. Should take around 1 minute, but still running after a few hours.

More to follow...
