Seagate Rosewood - ST2000LM007

Post by lcoughey »

After doing a head change on this Rosewood, the drive detects with some faint clicking in the background. I had to modify the ROM in order to gain access to the SA to save the firmware out and to generate the head map within Data Extractor. Of the 4 heads, head 0 was reading slowly between 1 and 10MBps while the other heads were reading between 110 and 125MBps.

After getting the heads 1,2,3 mirrored, I went back to target the unread sectors of head 0. Although the task is set to send a software reset on an error, it doesn't seem to kick in when the drive slows down to 1MBps with a faint thrashing sound in the background. But, with a couple manual software resets, the imaging jumps to over 120MBps for a few minutes.

It is likely the drive's built in read retries that is causing the grief, but rather messing around with the firmware, I just spent the hour babysitting the project, hitting soft reset every few minutes to maintain the speeds.
