With Steve following me, it didn't take long for him to comment.

Re: SpinRite
If their objective was to recover the data, it likely would have only taken a few minutes with ddrescue. With a log, they could just pickup where they left off, either by repowering the computer or simply reconnecting the power cable on the drive...in comparrison to SpinRite without the hardware abi...

Re: Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120GB PCB Issue No Power
That was an era of drive where the Smooth MCU chip would frequently fry. I tend to swap the board, if I can, just to avoid the rabbit trail.
I'm got a bunch of cases to keep my busy right now, but will see if I can find a working board on our shelf to compare readings.

Re: SpinRite
Kind of ironic that it failed at 97%. To the best of my knowledge, it was not a hard failure and I assume that there is no data of any value to worry about.

Re: SpinRite
When it comes to mOLD and btec sectors on SMR Seagates, that actually may save a client's data from Spinrite, assuming that every read is with a long timeout. If under 500ms, those sectors will report as bad, rather than give garbage data. The scenario is not much different than my Seagate Grenada w...

Re: SpinRite
This is a good candidate for a shootout. Why not do the headswap, recover the data, then reinstall the original heads and let SpinRite thrash the drive? My thoughts exactly. It will somewhat depend on what the client decides on my quote and if they will permit me to keep the drive when all is said ...

Re: SpinRite
So, close to 1/4 of the drive would be lost if it could complete before total failure.

Re: SpinRite
I have a Seagate recovery case here right now where head 3 reads at the lower LBA sectors, but by about 1%, it isn't reading any sectors at all. I'm confident that I can get near 100% read of this drive after a head swap or possibly even with AFH adjustments. However, what would happen to all those ...
